DLF Square and Nestle House | Gurgaon

The initial quality that captivates about this development is the sheer contrasting diversity of its two buildings – the cubist highrise DLF Square and the forceful low-slung Nestlé House. Together, they complete the DLF trilogy on the National Highway-8 in Gurgaon along with DLF Gateway Tower and DLF Atria.

Originally, the DLF Square was intended for the Nestlé group. But, during the course of construction there was a change in its management. The new administration was of the opinion that the facility was too large for their operations. So, DLF took over the original building, and a new facility was proposed for Nestlé on the same site. The first building, DLF Square verbalises absolute minimalism. Its simplicity is especially evident in the repetitive square module used in the plan. The idea of a modernist cuboid resting on white concrete supports was first sketched by the architect on a napkin in a Paris cafe. The facade with rhythmic patterning of minor fenestrations in the concrete cradle adds to the structure's austere charm. Four aluminium clad bastions hold up the structure and they house the air handling units, staircases and service lifts allowing multiple access to each floor on all four corners. Upper floors accommodate offices and have flexible spaces that can be configured as per requirements. The recessive blue glass entrance almost blends with the blue sky and funnels down the structure's enormity.

As a sharp contrast to the symmetry of DLF Square, the sinuous DLF Nestlé is a play of curves – in plan as well as in section. A trussed roof supports the roof slab while an extended pergola gives it an added visual dimension. This roof rising from the ground expresses itself as a sculptural object and draws attention. The pergola creates a remarkable pattern and is a visual treat for the onlookers from the tower. Further, the curvilinear section of the building results in a reduction in the floor plate area of ascending floors in line with Nestlé's area demands. The glass clad organic form creates visual interest and gives a different dimension to the building from different angles.

A central landscaped square binds the two buildings. A showy fountain is the focal point of the square. In the end, both the buildings complement each other whilst retaining their distinct presence and collectively go on to make a bold statement.
